Bailey McCann, Opalesque New York: Franklin Templeton's liquid alternative offering Franklin K2 Alternative Strategies Fund has raised some $1.3 billion since 2013. The firm claims that K2 represents the fastest growing fund launch of any type in the past five years, according to a Reuters report.
The '40 Act fund includes several high-profile hedge funds as sub-advisors - Chilton Investment Company, York Capital Management and Graham Capital Management.
As Opalesque reported, Franklin Templeton made the multi-strat fund available to Canadian investors in late May. The fund is also available in Europe as a Luxembourg-registered SICAV.
Liquid alternative funds are a fast growing segment of the investment universe. While many of them come from individual hedge fund managers, more traditional firms like Franklin Templeton are getting in on the act. According to recent research from Preqin, liquid alternatives outperformed hedge funds in 2014 and did so with lower fees.
Data shows that the average alternative mutual fund delivered returns of 4.36% over the course of 2014, compared to 3.78% for single-manager hedge funds.
