Equity hedge, event driven led hedge funds gains in mid-February

Hedge funds posted gains through mid- February, led by equity hedge and event driven strategies, with the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index gaining +1.08% while the HFRX Market Directional Index posted a gain of +0.79%.

Data provider Hedge Fund Research (HFR) said that the global financial markets posted gains through mid-February, as volatility associated with currency, fixed income and commodity dislocations subsided. Global equity markets posted gains led by the energy sector which were distributed across both large and small caps, with regional strength from U.S., Brazil, Australia and Russia.

"Other sector gains were from technology, telecom and financials, while most European equities posted strong gains. Energy commodities posted a strong recovery from several months of losses, led by sharp gains in crude oil, Brent crude and copper; agricultural commodity gains were led by wheat, corn & cotton, while Metals were mixed. Currency volatility also declined through mid- February as the U.S. dollar posted mixed performance, declining against the euro, British pound sterling and Russian ruble, while posting gains against the Japanese yen, Swiss franc and Brazilian real. Fixed income yields rose but trading remained volatile and fluid as a result of continuing uncertainty about Greece and the extension of financial bail......................
