Hedge fund managers' commentaries to be soon written by machines?

Komfie Manalo, Opalesque Asia:

A writing software developed by Narrative Science called Quill, is taking over jobs of journalists and may also relieve analysts and fund managers from writing financial reports by turning numerical data into written stories using artificial intelligence.

Narrative Science CEO Stuart Frankel told Technology Review that Quill has shown significant success in transforming numerical data into written reports. The software is also a useful application to write reports on baseball games for TV and online sports outlets. Quill can also translate income statements into reports that are easily understood by users.

However, Quill has also generated bad reviews because of its potential to displace human workers. But Frankel has welcomed all the publicities generated by the software. He was quoted as saying, "A lot of people felt threatened by what we were doing, and we got a lot of coverage. It led to a lot of inquiries from all different industries and to the evolution to a different business. It goes from the job of a small army of people over weeks to just a few seconds. We do 10- to 15-page documents for some financial clients."

Quill’s disadvantage is that it can only write stories using numerical data by performing analysis on that data ......................
