From Forbes: Soft commodities outperform during recessions, but our experts aren't coming back for seconds. During recessions, various soft commodities like sugar, soybean oil and cocoa have made investors put their money where their mouths are. Or so proved Gary Gorton of the University of Pennsylvania and K. Geert Rouwenhorst from the Yale School of Management, in their 2004 paper "Facts and Fantasies About Commodities Futures."
