The concentration of wealth – and property wealth in particular – in Britain’s south-eastern corner is hardly a new phenomenon. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, however, the gap between London and the rest has widened further and faster than ever. Left unchecked, the “two-speed” housing market increasingly in evidence will not only exacerbate social divisions; it begins to undermine the very notion of national economic policy.
