That public awareness created a demand for reducing the use of pesticides, protecting endangered species and preserving the oceans. That demand, once viewed as radical and even anti-business, is now squarely in the business mainstream. Catering to this demand is the "cleantech" industry, a name for a variety of fields that in one way or another focus on environmental protection, energy efficiency and new sources of energy. So pervasive is the trend that it may be misleading to speak of cleantech as a separate industry.
