The announcement of a new Sovereign Wealth Fund for the North to invest money from shale gas has been hailed by experts as a great idea – though critics say it comes several decades too late and that it is by no means certain there will be a big shale bounty. George Osborne said he wanted to make sure ‘that the shale gas resources of the North are used to invest in the future of the North’.
