07.09.2016 - Evaluating China’s low-carbon cities
China was responsible for 25 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2012. According to World Bank research, cities consume more than 65 per cent of global energy and emit some 70 per cent of greenhouse gases. Transforming cities into ‘low-carbon cities’ will therefore be an important policy tool in mitigating climate change. In early 2008, the Ministry of Construction of China and the World Wide Fund for Nature introduced ‘Low-Carbon City’ pilot schemes in Shanghai and Baoding in Hebei province.
