During President Xi Jinping’s trip to the United States, much of the discussion centred around the two countries’ upcoming efforts to battle climate change. Both presidents, Xi and Barack Obama, agreed that increased ambition is required for previously agreed emission cuts to succeed. As part of this newfound effort, China is planning to roll out a national emissions trading scheme (ETS) in 2017. The 2017 start date was one of the announcements China made during Xi’s state visit.
