Commodities have been in a bear market for the past seven years. In the past several months, the downturn has accelerated significantly. This produces losers, but also winners, namely the developed world. Three of the largest economic areas of the globe, Europe, Japan and the U.S., receive a net benefit from lower commodity prices. Low oil and other raw materials prices, which affect consumers and manufacturers alike, are the equivalent of a massive tax reduction on consumers and corporations.
