Towards the end of this year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will decide on whether to include the Chinese yuan in its basket of currencies represented by the Special Drawing Rights (SDR). The SDR is an international reserve asset comprising an elite league of currencies - the United States dollar, the pound sterling, the Japanese yen and the euro. Acceptance into this league means China will become the first emerging economy to play host to a global reserve currency.
