India on Tuesday marks Akshaya Tritiya – a day considered as an auspicious time to buy gold. But is it? Sales of gold and silver usually shoot up every year on Akshaya Tritiya that usually falls in late April or early May and around which the World Gold Council has focused major marketing efforts in recent years. Akshaya means – “that which never diminishes,” and Tritiya — derived from the Sanskrit root for “three”— specifies when in the lunar calendar it falls. India is the world’s largest consumer of gold; the metal is a common gift during festivals, religious events and weddings.
