The Canadian province of Ontario is following its efforts to phase out coal-fired electricity generation by introducing a cap-and-trade system to limit greenhouse gas emissions. The cap-and-trade system will set limits on greenhouse gas emissions allowed in each sector of the province's economy, allocating quotas to individual companies. The system aims to encourage businesses to improve their energy efficiency by enabling them to sell unused portions of their quota. The province will join the cap-and-trade system under the Western Climate Initiative, a collaboration of jurisdictions from western US states and Canadian provinces working together to develop and implement emissions trading policies at a regional level.
