Bad news is good news for copper bulls. After being weighed down for years by slowing demand in China, prices of the industrial metal are on the rise again in recent weeks because of a series of calamities, ranging from flooding and mudslides in northern Chile—which have claimed at least 25 lives—to an electrical failure in Australia. These unforeseen events have shut copper mines and caused severe disruptions to the world’s output of the metal, which is used in everything from consumer electronics to air conditioners and water pipes.
