A potato is a seemingly innocuous item on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s list of food-and-agriculture products prohibited from entering the country. (Here’s just a taste of foods that customs officers have confiscated: “birds nest mislabeled as potato chips” “whale meat sausage” “soil associated with live plants” and “vegetable sandwich from the plane”) But as the WSJ reported in a page-one story Friday, the humble spud could carry a host of pests that could harm the U.S. food supply. The spud is hardly alone in posing a threat.
