Since the dawn of trade, investors have run for the safety of precious metals, in particular gold, during times of crisis and uncertainty. Renewed appetite for precious metals has coincided with perhaps the most democratising revolution in asset management since mutual funds were introduced: exchange-traded funds (ETFs). ETFs have been incredibly successful in most asset classes, but arguably the most success has been in commodities, notably physical gold ETFs.
