Spiraling violence in Iraq and a possible resolution to South Africa’s mining strikes are adding a fresh element to a profitable metals trade. For the last several months, some investors struck a delicate balance using commodities whose prices were moving in opposite directions: buying futures in platinum and palladium, while betting against gold, several traders and brokers said. Platinum and palladium were surging on a prolonged miners strike in South Africa, a key producer of both metals.
