Traders’ enthusiasm for the European Union Emissions Trading System has slumped during recent years. But at the same time, there have been a variety of significant developments in carbon markets elsewhere around the globe. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol cemented the status of cap-and-trade schemes as an internationally agreed method of cutting emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases.
