And so it begins? On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve is expected to announce that it will begin “tapering”, the start, however gentle, of winding down its vast programme of quantitative easing (QE). Analysts think the US central bank will reduce its $85bn-a-month (£53bn) purchase of assets under what is effectively a money-printing exercise, by up to $15bn a month.
