After weeks of discussions by regulators on whether banks should continue to be allowed to own physical commodity assets such as warehouses, oil tankers and power plants, Financial News looks at why bank ownership of commodity assets is so controversial. At a hearing in front of the US Senate Banking Committee last week, Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman Gary Gensler said: “These markets [commodities] matter. They matter on the dining table at night. They matter for somebody buying a six-pack of beer.
