This has not been an easy year to be a gold investor. For two years there has been a general slump in global commodity prices, particularly raw materials. Precious metals prices held up about six months longer than most raw materials, then joined the march lower. The strengthening dollar, which bottomed about two years ago, is partially responsible, since it makes internationally traded goods cheaper. But many domestically traded commodities, like steel, are suffering as well. That can’t be chalked up to currency exchange rates.
