India's parliament is likely to receive an amendment in its next session that would permit financial institutions such as banks and mutual funds to trade in commodity derivatives and introduce trading of commodity options, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K.V. Thomas said Wednesday. Supporters of the amendment to a law governing commodity derivatives markets say it would lead to a massive increase in trading volumes, and reduced volatility, in a country that is one of the world's top producers and consumers of agricultural commodities and a major producer of minerals.
