Sovereign wealth funds, which have traditionally taken a low profile, have become increasingly prominent in recent years. Assets under management in sovereign wealth funds increased 9% last year on 2010, up from $4.2 trillion to $4.8 trillion. In comparison, hedge funds worldwide manage $1.8 trillion in assets, while private equity firms control $2.6 trillion.
