Nectar Financial hires senior investment team

Tuesday, November 29, 2016
Opalesque Industry Update - Nectar Financial AG, a Swiss financial technology company for wealth and asset management, has announced that it has hired two key senior leaders to spearhead its digital asset management efforts. The company also announced that it has entered into a cooperation with Fundbase, to support the launch of the first Fintech-driven systematic Alternatives portfolio that will serve as an initial module of its intelligent investment engine.

Nectar Financial provides middle and back office services for more than 30 family offices, independent asset managers and banks and supports them in managing assets in excess of CHF 35 billion. After the rebranding of the former Etops AG to Nectar Financial, the company is on a rapid technological expansion course and is about to launch its own Wealth Management platform. The platform will enable wealth managers, family offices ,asset managers and banks to replace fragmented and complex IT systems with an integrated solution. The Nectar Financial solution will simplify customer and portfolio management, enable users to automate and efficiently meet all regulatory requirements domestic and cross border, as well as providing institutional investment content.

In order to offer its clients the choice of a seamlessly integrated intelligent digital investment engine, Nectar Financial has built up an in house investment team. Steven Kaufmann as Chief Investment Officer and Andreas Gilgen as Head Alternatives Intelligence will lead the team to support Nectar’s clients to improve investment results where possible, for the benefit of their end-clients.

Steven Kaufmann joins Nectar Financial from AXA Winterthur, where he managed their CHF 3.3 billion pension fund and co-managed the CHF 90 billion insurance assets. As a CIO, Steven successfully pioneered a modern core-satellite asset allocation. Under his management, the pension fund was differentiated by the fact that it resembled more the US endowment model than that of a typical Swiss pension fund. Among other modules, Steven implemented a stable allocation in Hedge Funds, Real Estate, Private Equity, ILS and Structured Credit while always putting great emphasis on cost-efficient implementation. This has proven to yield excellent risk/return results for the pension fund.

Steven has managed sizable portfolios for over a decade with the rigor developed from his Masters degree in Mathematics from ETH Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich and his early career experience in Electrical Engineering and IT. Steven Kaufmann said: “I am thrilled to join Switzerland’s biggest and most dynamic Fintech and help our clients get access to a fully institutional investment engine and content from the most modern digital platform.”

“We are delighted to have Steven in our team. He has a proven track record in implementing an institutional asset management concept and forming a world class investor out of a large pension fund,” says Nectar Financial co-founder and CEO Michael Appenzeller.

Andreas Gilgen joins Nectar Financial to head the efforts to build smart and efficient institutional alternative portfolios for the global wealth management market. Prior to Nectar Financial, Andreas was the Head of Research and CIO at GL Funds for nine years, managing up to CHF 2 billion in multi-manager products. Andreas also worked as a consultant to numerous hedge funds and has vast experience in institutional asset management. He has a Master of Science Degree in Business Administration from Zurich University of Applied Sciences and Art and a certified EFFAS Financial Analyst.

Andreas will lead the process for the assessment of each portfolio holding and for this purpose will work in very close cooperation with Fundbase, the leading Alternatives Fintech platform.

Andreas Gilgen said: “Fundbase has a built-in information advantage to source and assess alternative investment strategies. Combining this with decades of hands-on due diligence and manager assessment experience will be a winning combination to generate uncorrelated and superior returns.”

Michael Appenzeller CEO and Co-Founder of Nectar Financial said: “Andreas is a veteran in the alternative and hedge fund industry. Over the last two decades he successfully weathered the challenges our industry has seen. Andreas will be a key asset in our strategy to support our clients to manage risks and improve investment results.”

With more than 55 employees and a proven track record, Nectar Financial is one of the largest and most successful Fintech companies in Switzerland. Nectar Financial is the technology partner of some of the largest family offices, multi-family offices, banks and sophisticated asset managers for the outsourcing of business-critical middle office processes, reporting, system solutions, data management and business projects.
