Dallas-based Boardage Capital launches strategy focused on basic materials, mining and metals, and hires COO

Wednesday, February 11, 2015
Opalesque Industry Update - Boardage Capital Management, LLC, announced the launch of its strategy focused on basic materials, mining and metals. Dallas-based Boardage seeded the investment approach with internal capital in October 2013. As part of the firm’s growth, Boardage also announced the addition of Collin Schuhmacher to the team as Partner. Schuhmacher will be responsible for heading Boardage’s business development, operations and compliance as Chief Operating Officer.

Founder Kevin Nicholson employs a top-down approach to identifying opportunities and investment themes within the basic materials sector. Bottom-up fundamental research subsequently identifies equities most impacted by these themes. These investment ideas are used to create a portfolio with very little net market exposure to reduce market risk and isolate the expected returns from these ideas. Nicholson has nearly 10 years of experience in this sector, enabling him to identify, analyze and understand risk/return tradeoffs in the area.

“Boardage strives to exploit opportunities that arise at the intersection between commodities and equity markets,” said Nicholson. “We leverage our in-depth knowledge of the sector to constantly reevaluate the evolving commodities marketplace and take advantage of the most compelling risk-adjusted return opportunities offered.”

“Over the past year, we focused on managing the portfolio and building up our infrastructure,” Nicholson continued. “With the addition of Collin, we are eager to partner with like-minded investors in pursuing strong risk/reward outcomes in the basic materials sector.”

Nicholson, an 18 year investment management veteran, co-founded Belltower Advisors in 2009, where he managed the metals and mining portfolio.

Schuhmacher has over 15 years of investing experience. He was a partner at Owl Creek Asset Management in New York City, where from 2004-2012 he served as a member of the investment team. Prior to joining Boardage, he was with Hirzel Capital Management in Dallas.
