Greenwich Global Hedge Fund Index gains 1% (est.) in December, (9.1% in 2013)

Opalesque Industry Update - Greenwich Mid-Month Update: Despite the dip at the beginning of the month hedge funds returned an average of +1.03% in December 2013 as indicated by the Greenwich Global Hedge Fund Index. Equity markets were up in December as measured by the S&P500, up +2.53%, MSCI World, up +2.01% and FTSE 100, up +1.48%.

Global Index Strategy Highlights

- The Other Arbitrage Strategies outperformed all major strategies in December gaining +1.65%. They were followed by the Long/Short Value funds which were up +1.42% for the month. Short- Biased funds were the only strategy to post losses of -3.26% for December.

- Distressed Securities continued to dominate on a year-to-date bases. Up an average +18.36% in 2013, Distressed Securities funds gained +0.81% in December.

- The Developed Markets strategies outperformed the Emerging Markets strategies in 2013 with returns of +10.3% and +1.51% respectively.
