Florida hedge fund sees long-term opportunity in healthcare

Healthcare stocks may be in for more volatility, but a specialist hedge fund manager is betting on its current - and what might be decades-long - innovation cycle instead.

Dr. Shaheen Wirk is an MD who started in the investment world 15 years ago at a New York-based hedge fund called Bridger Capital. He took the plunge in 2013 by launching Palkon Capital Management, a long/short fundamental equity hedge fund, with seed capital from Julian Robertson and Tiger Management. The fund invests in five subsectors: biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, specialty pharmaceuticals and generics.

"Biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and specialty pharmaceuticals have faced major challenges this year," he said at the recent Opalesque Miami Roundtable. And he saw these headwinds as an opportunity to average down the cost of his positions.
