Shaunka Khire, who co-designed an artificial intelligence (AI) robot called EMMA/MANSI, talks to Opalesque about his creation. EMMA/MANSI is an autonomous AI that runs on two neural networks, with supervised and unsupervised learning. It is not an algorithm trading system; rather, it serves to help improve financial analysis, research and consulting services. ​ Khire, who is based in Palo Alto and New York, is in the process of starting a fund that uses EMMA.

Shaunak Khire: We are talking with several hedge funds and family offices to partner, where they could use our AI, and we are also internally starting up a fund. But right now the AI has some money that we have given to EMMA for it to manage autonomously, and the returns have been so far pretty good.

  Opalesque: What type of returns?

  Shaunak Khire: We have achieved 13.9% from June till now. Most of the investments have been in very large cap names, GlaxoSmithKline, General Electric, and a couple of currency plays to name a few. Those "themes" are the opportunities that have been found by EMMA during those periods. The ultimate goal is to achieve uncorrelated alpha.
