Agri veteran investors launch food PE/hedge fund

Jayson Woodbridge and Michael Kyne incorporated Prairie Wind Advisors, a specialized investment firm, in Grand Cayman in June 2015. They run an equity total return strategy focused on the global agricultural, food and environmental sectors in developed markets.

Both have many years of experience in the sector. Woodbridge was an agricultural investment banker before starting his own global wine operation. Kyne started out in research for a clean environment fund in the early 90s, managed a $1bn commodity strategy at Driehaus Capital for five years, and went on to run his own natural resources fund, which he wound up in 2009 as such strategies were not doing well at the time.

"I had identified the trend in 1995," he recalls, "where I saw a global infrastructure built starting to pick up speed. I felt it was going to be very positive for the hard materials market and reflected through equity investment. So I built my strategy focused on that for the better part of the next 16 years, but it was very clear in 2008 and 2009 that the cycle was coming to an end. If you look at it historically, those cycles tend to be considerably long, and then periods of retraction equally as long. So we may not see another cycle like that in our lifetime."
