Miami firm launches long/short equity strategy based on behavioral finance research

Coral Gables Asset Management, LLC (CGAM) was founded in 2014. The Miami-based firm launched on 1st August this year a long/short domestic equity investment strategy. The portfolio focuses on mid-cap stocks which are under-researched and less efficiently priced than large-caps. The strategy employs independent sources of predictable patterns in stock returns, and uses a proprietary investment models to rank stocks based on signal strength. The trading strategy is unique in that it uses ideas from the emerging field of behavioral finance.

Two of the firm's principals, Dr. Jawad Addoum, portfolio manager, and David C. Coggins, principal, talked to Opalesque about the strategy.

Opalesque: What is your strategy based on?

David Coggins: Our strategy is based on research in the emerging field of behavioral finance by the co-founders of our firm: Dr. Alok Kumar, Finance Department Chair at the University of Miami Business School, and Dr. Jawad Addoum, Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Miami Business School. Our Fund is a quantitative strategy that utilizes geographic diffusion and industry-level political sensitivity to generate alpha.
