Komfie Manalo, Opalesque Asia:
A study by finance hiring site Vettery found that the hedge fund industry is still
dominated by male than their female counterpart.
CNBC
reported on Vettery's analysis of the career path of investment banking
analysts over the past two years, covering 1,394 analysts —76% male and
24% female – of which at least 88% landed jobs in hedge fund.
Men also outnumber women in the number of senior roles across the hedge
fund industry. And even while some women in hedge funds established
successful performance, they do not receive the same recognition than
their male counterparts, the study said. Veterry also noted that some
studies found that women working at hedge funds achieve better returns.
Indeed, a recent list of the top 50 hedge fund managers across the world
are all male.
Alex Orn, Vettery's director of analytics was quoted as saying, "We see
a lot more males actually interested in hedge funds, but regardless of
that, it's extremely difficult for both males and females," he said. But
he denied there was a trend amongst hedge funds to discriminate women.
He said, "Demand for qualified females is off the charts," and added
that "hedge funds are focused squarely on whether candidates love stocks
and can make money."
