Japan offers opportunities for hedge fund investors

Japan offers opportunities for hedge fund investors as Tokyo’s economy remains strong, said Takehiko Nakao, president of the Asian Development Bank during a press briefing with members of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) in Manila.

Nakao made the statement in reaction to the recent survey by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch amongst hedge fund managers in the second week of November wherein investors described Tokyo as their "flavor of the month." Investors said they were confident with the decision by the Bank of Japan to expand its quantitative easing (QE) policy and purchase additional government bonds.

"There are many opportunities in Japan. The tourism sector in Japan is also showing improvement with many tourists visiting the country. There are also prospects in other sectors," Nakao said and said he agrees with the bullish sentiments of the hedge fund managers.

The ADB president added that he expects the Japanese economy to return to growth in the fourth quarter of this year.

In the Bank of America survey, hedge fund managers said they were more bullish with Japan than at any time in the last decade and fund managers have the most positive outlook on Japan.
