Managed futures have potential to profit from market declines, provide global diversification

A case study of managed futures by absolute return investment management Campbell & Company said that the strategy has the potential to profit from market declines and provide exposure to global markets, rather than being U.S.- centric.

For the last few years, with the U.S., Europe and Asia all committed (for the most part) to aggressive stimulus measures, geographic diversification may have been somewhat less valuable. But as diverging monetary policy continues to take hold, it seems likely that opportunities by geography may diverge as well, the study said.

Campbell & Company added, "In the third quarter, the best opportunities for Campbell were in Europe and Asia/Africa, while trading in North America was roughly flat. The common theme among the features highlighted here is flexibility: Managed Futures strategies can invest long or short, in both traditional and non-traditional asset classes, in multiple regions. This flexibility allowed many programs to post strong results in the third quarter, despite the pullback in global markets."
