Naqvi-Van Ness A.M. hires new director of business development

Naqvi-Van Ness Asset Management, a US-based research-intensive hedge fund manager, announced that Juan Buendia had joined the firm as Director of Business Development at the start of 2012. In a statement, the firm said that it brought Buendia to help secure strategic partner capital and participate in the institutional investment arena.

Buendia was most recently at BlackRock, leading the firm’s global sovereign and central bank client group as well as its institutional business in Latin America. Prior to that, he was a Partner with Brinson Partners, responsible for establishing and managing relationships with pension plans and sovereign institutions in the Americas.

Ali Naqvi, Managing Partner of NVAM, said "We have known Juan since the early 90s and we have a common approach to business development and institutional relationship management. Additionally, we believe that his international background will afford us the option to pivot in that direction in the future."

The firm manages two funds that combine long-short equity with directional trading strategies: Metis Partners and Criteria Investment Partners, which were launched in July 2005 and January 2008 respectively. Both funds seek to deliver absolute returns in all market environments from alpha, not beta. Criteria, the flagship fund, has $11.6m in AuM.
